Leaving a Legacy behind: Lady Cats beat Lady Broncos in Game 3, 10-6

GRAPEVINE -- Before the 2010 season, Plano Senior softball had never been past the second round of the playoffs.

The Lady Wildcats (29-5) advanced to at least the third round for a third straight year Saturday with a 10-6 victory over Mansfield Legacy (27-6) in the decisive game of a best-of-3 area series between two of the top 10 teams in the state. And for a third straight season, matching the work done against Flower Mound in 2010 and Hebron in 2011, Plano won the series, 2-1, after dropping the opening game.

"I don't think losing that first one really fazed us," said Kristen Miles, Plano senior outfielder. "We knew we were capable of winning two straight."

WEB EXCLUSIVE: Search for new Allen soccer coach down to two

Published: Thursday, May 26, 2011 2:46 PM CDT
In its attempt to find a replacement for former Eagles boys soccer head coach Robert Jacobs, Allen athletic director Steve Williams confirmed Thursday the candidate list is down to two.

Though Williams wouldn't say who the two were, he did note both are internal candidates.

"I think having internal candidates does make the process a lot easier," Williams said, "because they already know us and we already know them."

The interview committee consists of Williams and assistant athletic director Kim Garner. Williams said they hope to finalize the new coach by next week. The new leader of the Eagles will replace Jacobs, who was relieved of his coaching duties.

"I don't really want to get into why (the change was made), but I have nothing bad to say about coach Jacobs," Williams said. "He did a good job for us."

After having entrenched coaches in Mike Wiersema on the boys side and Karen Hunnicutt on the girls side, this is the second straight year Allen has needed a new coach. Kevin Albury took over for the Lady Eagles last season after Hunnicutt retired.

"Life changes, but things keep moving," Williams said. "We are still going to have kids come in and we still expect to have a strong program."
