11-5A BASEBALL: Skeeters, Stallions continue strong play in district
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Through the first half of the 11-5A season, Mesquite and North Mesquite established themselves as the teams to beat.
They did nothing to dispel that on Tuesday when the second half of the district season got started, as both picked up blowout victories.
The Skeeters and Stallions join Tyler Lee atop the 11-5A standings with a 5-1 record and four games left in the district season.
North Mesquite rolled over cross-town rival Horn in a 10-2 win. Steven Rosser held the Jaguars to just two runs on four hits.
Ivan Santoya doubled and Hunter Benavides tripled and the Stallions also took advantage of five Horn errors.
With the district title up for grabs, one team will take a huge step forward on Friday when North Mesquite and Mesquite meet at Copeland Field.
The Skeeters will then host winless DeSoto on Tuesday at Tillery Field while the Stallions will play at home against Longview on the same day.
Despite the loss on Tuesday, Horn is still in sole possession of fourth place with a one-game lead over Longview. The Jaguars have a good chance to pick up a win on Friday against DeSoto before traveling to take on Tyler Lee on Tuesday.
LAST WEEK: Stallions pull into tie for first place with Mesquite
North Mesquite picked up a pair of big victories in the span of 24 hours and as a result, found itself tied atop the 11-5A standings.
The Stallions' 8-2 victory over DeSoto on Thursday, coupled with Tyler Lee's 3-2 win over Mesquite, created a tie for first place between North Mesquite and the Skeeters at 4-1.
The Stallions got a strong pitching performance from Steven Rosser, as the Eagles managed only two hits in the game. Hunter Benavides had a double and Thomas Oberg added a triple to pace the offense.
While North Mesquite was putting the finishing touches on its win, Mesquite was falling just short in a one-run loss to Tyler Lee. Neither team managed much offense, as there were only five hits in the game.
Daniel Ferra allowed only three hits, but was victimized by his defense, which committed three errors.
Also on Thursday, Horn picked up an important victory that could go a long way toward its playoff hopes with an 8-2 win over Longview. Jared Davidson scattered six hits to earn the win on the mound, while Logan Trent's double was one of 13 hits.
Because of the bad weather that hit the area last Tuesday, the teams also played on Wednesday.
Mesquite banged out a 13-7 win over Horn. Chris Tyra was the winning pitcher, Carlos Chavez had a huge game with a double and two triples, while Ferra and Trey Lablanc added extra-base hits.
North Mesquite, meanwhile, posted an 11-5 victory over Tyler Lee on Wednesday. Dennis Harper earned the win on the mound, and he got plenty of support, as Matt Werry, Tyler Starks, Benavides and Chris Peterson all had doubles.
