HEAD: Pirate softball team earns huge victory in 15-4A

Published: Thursday, April 5, 2012 5:44 PM CDT
If Poteet is one of the district's four playoff teams at season's end, it might look back at Saturday as one of the biggest moments of the regular season.

The Pirates, who are currently in the middle of a heated battle for a postseason spot, pulled out a 5-2 victory over Forney, one of the three teams they trail in the 15-4A standings.

Poteet and Red Oak are currently tied for fourth place in district play with 6-5 records.

Cassie Vasquez got the win on the mound for the Pirates, holding Forney's powerful offense to just a pair of runs.

Poteet put together one of its better hitting games of the season. Madison Yannetti belted a pair of doubles, while Vasquez, Selena Mendoza and Brittany Foshee all added extra-base hits.

West Mesquite also had an enjoyable Saturday, as it crushed Lancaster in a 21-2 win to get its second district victory.

Aaryn Gallegos got the win for the Wranglers, allowing just one hit. Elizabeth Vite doubled, Karla Cariaga had a double and a triple and Chelsea Lopez smacked a home run in the winning effort.

If Poteet is going to make the playoffs at season's end, it needs to take care of business against the teams at the bottom of the 15-4A standings.

The Pirates did just that a week ago last Saturday as the posted a 6-1 victory over Terrell.

The Pirates got a strong performance on the mound from Darrianne Hale, who scattered four hits to earn the win. Courtney Evans doubled and Mendoza tripled to lead a nine-hit attack.

It was a quick bounce-back win for Poteet, which had dropped an 8-4 decision to Waxahachie less than 24 hours earlier.

The Pirates banged out 10 hits, including doubles from Mendoza and Foshee, but it was not enough.

Poteet and West Mesquite will renew their cross-town rivalry on Thursday at the Mesquite Girls Softball Complex.

The Pirates will then host winless Lancaster on Tuesday while the Wranglers will hit the road to face Waxahachie.
