Poteet baseball team slips to 4-3 with loss to Ennis
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@acnpapers.com
Poteet has ruled the 15-4A baseball scene in recent years.
From 2007-2011, the Pirates won an incredible 50 consecutive district games.
But Poteet was hit hard by graduation from last year's team, which advanced to the Class 4A state tournament.
Poteet, which is 5-9 overall, had been coming off back-to-back victories.
On Friday, the Pirates had no problems with Lancaster as they cruised to a 14-0 win. Chase Coronado got the win on the mound, throwing a no-hitter.
Coronado got plenty of support, as Silas Firstley, Angel Rodriguez and Desmond Brackens all had doubles.
Last Tuesday, Logan Armstrong got the victory in the mound and helped his own cause with a double as Poteet edged crosstown rival West Mesquite, 6-5. Trey Stone added a double in the victory, as the Pirates overcame five errors.
It was a tough wee for the Wranglers, who also suffered a 17-1 loss to Waxahachie on Friday. West Mesquite managed only one hit as it fell to 1-4 in district play.
The Wranglers have a busy slate ahead as they will play Red Oak on Friday at Tillery Field and then play on the road at Forney on Saturday and at Corsicana on Tuesday.
Poteet will also be on the road for the next week, playing at Waxahachie on Saturday and at Terrell on Tuesday.
The Pirates are currently in fourth place as the 15-4A season closes in on the midpoint. Corsicana leads the district with a perfect 7-0 record, followed by Ennis (5-1) and Forney (4-2).
