GARLAND—The McKinney Boyd softball team continued its dominant run through district with a 13-0 win over Garland Naaman Forest on Thursday, which combined with a 5-0 win over Rowlett on Wednesday to stretch their winning streak to 12 games.

The back-to-back setup did nothing to slow the Lady Broncos (22-5-1, 10-0 in District 10-5A) down. They impressed in all aspects of play against Naaman Forest, starting in the circle with the performance of Carly Nicklas, who struck out seven and gave up three hits, all singles, but no runs in the complete game shutout.

The Lady Broncos backed her up defensively with an error-free game and knocked Naaman every which way at the plate, totaling 16 hits. Their range on offense included a pair of perfectly-executed bunt singles and a two-run homer from Sam Stockford and solo shot from Bailey Jo Jones.

“We've just been playing real consistent,” said Maureen Fritz, Boyd head coach. “It's nice to see them hitting away.”

Boyd's production heated up as the game progressed. After a scoreless opening two innings, the Lady Broncos picked up a run in the third and fourth before exploding for four runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth to invoke the district's run-rule.

The sixth featured hitting from up and down the Lady Broncos' order. The inning opened with a lead-off single from Nicklas, who advanced on a wild pitch and the frame's first out before coming home on an RBI single from Cassandra Heller. A bunt single from Mo McDonald set up another RBI single, this time from Maddy VonHagel, before McKenna Henry laced a two-RBI single and scored on Stockford's home run.

From there, Jones hit a double and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a passed ball to put Boyd up by its winning margin. Three outs later and the Lady Broncos were heading toward their bus for an early ride home.

Boyd had six players with multiple hits, including Henry, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a single to drive in three runs and score two; and Jill Nicklas, who also went 3-for-4 with a single, RBI double and triple and stole a base as part of her team's aggressive base-running approach.

Thursday's win was the latest in a string of district routs that has the Lady Broncos gliding through the most successful season in program history. They are currently alone in first place in the district standings, two games ahead of Rowlett, who they've already swept.

With four games left to play, Boyd has already clinched a playoff spot and is well on pace to win the first softball district championship in school history. The team's average winning margin in district has been 9.7 runs and the only teams other than Rowlett to score a run against them were North Garland and Garland – in 13-1 and 11-1 wins, respectively.

“I don't focus on that, but definitely we made the playoffs,” Fritz said. “That was an expectation of ours. That's a given. Now, it's what we're going to do during district and after; how we're going to play, and we've seriously been playing well.”

The Lady Broncos return to district action by hosting South Garland on Tuesday at 5 p.m. They defeated South Garland, 9-0, in their first meeting. From there, they'll close the regular season against Sachse, Garland and North Garland, teams they beat by a combined 32-2 during the first round of district.
