(Update) Construction worker rescued from trench
By Elizabeth Knighten, eknighten@starlocalnews.com
On Tuesday, Frisco Firefighter rescued a construction worker who had fallen in a trench while working on a section of Main Street.
Frisco Fire Chief Mack Borchardt said 43-year-old construction worker was lifted by CareFlite helicopter and taken to Medical Center of Plano after falling 15 feet below the ground.
"As I understand it, he was on the ground ... and he fell into the trench into the area where there was a shoring device in place," Borchardt said. "Shoring devices are basically, the fabricated metal walls that protect the workers down in the trench ... often times with a trench rescue, it is where the walls have caved in and trapped a worker ... the walls were secure and the area that he was in was safe as far as having a cave in."
Borchardt also said as far as he knew the worker "suffered multiple fractures."
"Those injuries, from what we were able to ascertain at the scene did not appear to be life threatening," Borchardt said. "We expect him to recover."
Seventeen firefighter -- paramedics were on the scene to help aid in rescuing the worker who fell in at 1:05 p.m. and was out of the trench by 1:58 p.m.
"While it's certainly an accident, we were fortunate that things went well for us to affect the rescue quickly," he said, "and that the safety measures were in place to protect the workers in the trench, and that did aid us in the rescue -- it was still a rather complicated rescue."
