The streets of downtown McKinney were even more busy than usual Saturday as hundreds of people strolled around looking at fine art in the making.
Artists were set up with their easels, paint and paint brushes on the streets around the McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC), creating works of beauty right in front of visitors from all over Collin County and beyond who had come for the Arts in Bloom event.
Chalk artists were busy drawing on the sidewalks around MPAC. Several had set up arts and crafts displays to sell items to the visitors, and downtown restaurants and shops were obviously engaged in hustling, bustling business.
"Arts in Bloom was very successful, and each year we continue to welcome new artists, activities and increased foot traffic to Historic Downtown McKinney," said Ty Lake, director of McKinney Main Street and MPAC. "This event provided a perfect opportunity to experience the magic of McKinney's historic district during the spring season with art, music, food, shopping and fun."
The annual event used to be called ArtWalk.
"This year, we opted to change the name due to the multitude of artistic activity occurring through downtown McKinney," Lake said. "The event has continued to grow by leaps and bounds each year."
More than 150 local and regional artists lined the streets throughout a 12-block area of downtown. McKinney ISD students presented their work at the Annual High School Art Show and Competition in the MPAC gallery.
The day concluded with DD and the Studebakers performing favorites from the jukebox era of the 1950s and 1960s in the MPAC Courtroom Theater.
While most of the activities were on the streets around MPAC, a farmers market took place until noon at Chestnut Square, and the McKinney Musical Arts Society's Young Artist Piano Competition took place Saturday morning at the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts.
"McKinney is truly blessed with incredible talent in all art forms," Lake said, "and we always look forward to showcasing the best of the best in our great city."
