Swimming: Carroll's pool of talent too deep, Dragons dominate state meet
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
Last year, a disqualification cost Southlake Carroll's girls swim and dive team a shot at sweeping the UIL Class 5A State Championships as the Lady Dragons settled for silver with the boys taking gold.
Saturday in Austin, Carroll overcame last year's disappointment with a first-place sweep.
The Dragons (258 points) took command of the meet early and cruised to the title ahead of San Antonio Churchill (158) and Conroe College Park (144). The Lady Dragons (275.5) dominated in the relay events and pulled away down the stretch from San Antonio Reagan (208.5) and Conroe The Woodlands (195).
While Murphy didn't believe that a girls sweep of the relay events had been achieved in the past, in particular at the 5A level, he could confirm Carroll's scoring totals on both the boys and girls sides set a record since 5A swimming began in 1999.
The Lady Dragons' quest was completed in part because of their success in the relay events. Carroll took first in all three races, setting program records in the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.22) and 400 free relay (3:27.99) in addition to setting a season-best in the 200 free relay (1:36.08).
The 200 medley squad of Lyndsie Gibson, Elise Weisert, Sydney Wheller and Taylor Derevyanik outlasted a group from Humble Kingwood (1:46.28) for first. Lindsay Schultz, Emily Zapinski, Emily Gibson and Derevyanik comprised the 200 free group, with Schultz, Zapinski, Rebecca Upton and Lyndsie making up the 400 free relay.
On the boys' side, Carroll was held off the first-place stand in all three relays, but still managed to garner points in each event.
The 400 free relay squad of Ted Singley -- the Region II Boys Swimmer of the Meet -- John Ausdenmoore, Ryan Walker and Curtis Goss set a season-best (3:05.80), but finished off the pace of College Park (3:04.42).
Singley and Ausdenmoore also combined with Jonathan Roberts and John Remetta to set a season-best mark and place fifth in the 200 free relay (1:26.09), while Roberts, Remetta, Goss and Ryan Walker set a program record in the 200 medley relay (1:34.14) en route to a bronze.
Singley also shined individually, adding more hardware by claiming gold and setting a program record in the 500 free (4:23.68) ahead of Roberts (4:25.36) and Tyler Lee's Sam Lewis (4:26.12) to go with his first place swim in the 200 free (1:38.38), where he also set a school mark.
Other top performers for the Dragons included Remetta with a silver in the 100 breaststroke (53.31 -- program record) and bronze in the 200 individual medley after posting a personal best of 1:50.73 to finish just ahead of Roberts with a personal best of 1:51.57 in fourth; Ausdenmoore in fourth in the 50 free (21.38) and sixth in the 100 free (46.46); and Ryan Walker in seventh in the 200 free (1:41.32) and seventh in the 100 backstroke (51.51). Roberts also earned a silver for Carroll in the 500 free (4:25.36), where he set a personal best, while Curtis Goss racked up fourth in the 100 butterfly (49.89) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (51.23). Goss' time in the butterfly set a program record. Rounding out the Carroll competitors on the boys side was Austin Nguyenphu in 12th in the 200 IM (1:54.90).
Claiming medals for Carroll on the girls side were Grace Kazmierski, who set a school mark on her way to silver in girls 1-meter diving (536.90) behind Kassidy Cook of The Woodlands (594.50). Lauren Crown, meanwhile, took sixth in diving (451.10). Lyndsie -- the Region II Girls Swimmer of the Meet -- picked up silver in the 100 backstroke (56.01) by setting a Lady Dragon record to go with fourth in the 500 free (4:55.62), while Elise Weisert notched a bronze and program record in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.43). Zapinski, meanwhile, improved upon a fourth-place finish in the 200 free (1:49.74) by picking up a silver medal in the 500 free (4:53.12).
Rounding out the Lady Dragon competitors was Upton in 12th in the 200 free (1:52.73), while Alexa Baran placed 15th in the 200 free (1:53.90), MacKenzie Leonard took eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.61), Derevyanik notched ninth in the 100 butterfly (57.16) and 10th in the 100 backstroke (56.71) and Schultz touched the wall in 11th in both the 50 (24.02) and 100 free (51.76).
Coppell's Hayden Henry, meanwhile, finished just off his personal best time in the 200 IM set at regionals (1:51.73) taking fifth at state (1:51.77).
Hebron was powered on the girls side by a gold-medal performance from Caroline Korst in the 100 backstroke (55.62) in addition to placing fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.39) for the Lady Hawks.
Hebron was represented on the boys side as well, where Joshua Clothier swam to fourth in the boys 100 free (46.28) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (51.46); and Jeff Gladu earned eighth in boys 1-meter diving (450.25).
Marcus' competitors included its girls relay teams; the 200 squad consisting of MacKenzie Thornton, Rileigh Thornton, Sarah Stone and Ali Smith finished 14th (1:40.27) while the same group placed 13th (3:36.52) in the 400 free relay.
"Our swimmers this year prepared for this meet for 11.5 months," Murphy said. "They did a great job and a coach is only as good as his swimmers, just like a leader is only as good as those who are willing to follow. It's all been a blessing from god. I haven't changed anything in my coaching approach the last 30 years but I have never had this level of success."
