Hockey: Green records hat trick and then some in Marcus win

Austin Green recorded four goals Thursday, sparking a scoring outburst for Marcus as the Marauders rolled past Garland, 9-1, in a varsity Silver Division contest in the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League.
Marcus and Garland were tied, 1-1, after the first period before the Marauders broke loose with six goals in the second period, including three from Green. Marcus also received scores from Peter Hatton, C.J. Scherer (2), Dominic de la Guardia and John Consolver.
The Marauders outshot the Owls, 43-17, including 20-4 in their dominant second period. Goalie Kamen Kessler made 16 saves for Marcus.
Denton County (6-6) found its way into the win column Thursday as well, blanking Bishop Lynch, 5-0.
Dylan Gumbert continued his solid run in goal, making 24 saves in the shutout. Gumbert has allowed just seven goals in the past five games with a save percentage of .954.
Goal-scorers for the Spartans included Danny Ryan (2), Devin Howard, Brad Duggan and Kaleb Croft.
Denton County guns for a sixth consecutive win at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday against Richardson/Rockwall at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in McKinney.
While the Spartans and Marauders stayed hot, Flower Mound (4-7-1) came up short against Richardson/Rockwall, 5-3.
The teams were square at 3-3 late in the third before Travis Short posted consecutive goals in the final two minutes to propel Richardson/Rockwall to the win.
The Jaguar attack was powered by Michael Ruggiero, Michael Ohara and Travis Donohue.
Assists went to Ohara (2), Dan Carlton, Donohue and Ruggiero.
Flower Mound continues at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Prosper at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Euless.
