Hockey: Marauders, Spartans earn wins

Published: Friday, December 2, 2011 8:54 PM CST
Flower Mound's hockey team was unable to record its fifth consecutive victory in the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League Thursday as McKinney held off a late Jaguar comeback attempt for a 4-3 win.

The Lions jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first period before Flower Mound rallied to even the contest at 3-3 midway through the second period. However, McKinney regained the edge on a penalty shot late in the second and held off Flower Mound in a scoreless third period.

Jarius Schulte recorded a goal and two assists for Flower Mound, while Travis Donohue and Corey Burns also contributed goals.

The Jaguars -- currently tied for sixth with Denton County in the Varsity Silver Division -- continue at 7:15 p.m. Thursday against Highland Park at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in McKinney.

The Spartans, meanwhile, won their third consecutive game Thursday cruising past Highland Park, 4-1.

Devin Howard got Denton County out to a solid start, posting goals in the first and early in the second to put the Spartans in front, 2-0. Cory Smith increased the margin to 3-0 and later in the second tacked on his second goal of the game on the power play for the final margin.

While Denton County's offense has been effective, the Spartans are thriving in part because of the play of goalie Dylan Gumbert. In Thursday's win against the Scots, Gumbert faced 47 shots and made 46 saves, including 24 in the second and 22 in the third despite the Spartans playing short-handed for a majority of the period.

"Dylan has played great for us during the past four years and is playing his best right now," said Bryan Heft, Denton County coach. "The entire team is responding to his attitude and determination with unselfish play in front of both nets.

"I like how we've been playing for the last five games and believe we can carry that momentum into a successful second half of the season. The guys are playing their guts out."

Denton County seeks its fourth consecutive win at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Farmers Branch against McKinney.

While things are trending upward for Flower Mound and Denton County, the same can be said for Marcus, which snapped a two-game skid Thursday with a 4-3 win over Prosper.

The Marauders saw the Eagles force overtime with 1:13 remaining in the third period. However, Marcus quickly responded in the extra frame when Matt Brauch recorded the game-winner via assists from Austin Green and Dominic de la Guardia just 11 seconds in.

Marcus scored three consecutive goals during the first and second periods as C.J. Scherer, Brandon Salisbury and de la Guardia found the back of the net. Kamen Kessler earned the win in goal with 21 saves.

Next up for Marcus is Plano East at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in McKinney.
