Hockey: Marcus, Flower Mound record wins

Published: Friday, November 11, 2011 6:29 PM CST
Marcus' hockey team got off the schnide in the varsity silver division of the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League Thursday as the Marauders notched their first win in seven attempts with a 3-2 overtime victory over Southlake Carroll.

The Dragons entered the contest second in the standings.

Weston Ward put the Marauders in front early in the second period on a goal assisted by Matt Brauch and Kevin Fox, but the Dragons responded with a goal late in the second and another early in the third to claim a 2-1 advantage. However, Brauch recorded the equalizer for Marcus with just 14 seconds remaining in the third to force overtime, where he promptly netted the game-winner courtesy of assists from Austin Green and Peter Hatton.

Marcus goalie Kamen Kessler had a busy night in net, but was up to the task, making 35 saves on 37 shots.

Jeff Mead earned the win on the bench coaching in his first game for the Marauders.

Marcus continues at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Richardson/Rockwall at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Euless.

In other varsity silver action, Flower Mound notched its second consecutive win of the season by slipping past Denton County in a back-and-forth contest, 6-4.

Courtesy of goals from Jarius Schulte and Dan Carlton, the Jaguars jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period. But the Spartans weren't held off the scoreboard much longer, outscoring the Jaguars, 3-0, in the second to take the lead. Devin Howard sparked the run for the Spartans, who also received goals in the period from Cameron Mixson and Danny Ryan.

The third period, however, belonged to Flower Mound.

Carlton's second goal evened the contest, 3-3, and after Brandon Breese momentarily regained the advantage for Denton County at 4-3, Flower Mound closed with three consecutive goals. Travis Donahue recorded the first two (both unassisted), before Michael O'Hara chipped in an empty-netter to secure the victory.

The Jaguars continue at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Garland at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Farmers Branch, while the Spartans look to bounce back at 7:15 p.m. Thursday against Frisco at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in McKinney.
