NTTA to start four-month project on Sam Rayburn Tollway

Published: Monday, May 7, 2012 11:40 AM CDT
The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) is set to begin a four-month maintenance project that will require periodic road closings on the Sam Rayburn Tollway (SRT) and State Highway 121.

The project will last for 120 days and will begin May 14. Lane closures are expected along the tollway between Lake Vista Drive and Hebron Parkway.

"The purpose of this project is to remove and replace distressed pavement," said Susan Slupecki, media relations manager. "The pavement repairs are being done to provide motorists a safer and smoother driving surface on the frontage roads and main lanes of the Sam Rayburn Tollway."

Pavement repairs will be performed in three areas on Highway 121 and one main lane area on the tollway. The four areas include northbound Highway 121 east of MacArthur Boulevard, where workers will remove and replace concrete pavement and rework the base material; southwest bound Highway 121 west of Lake Vista Drive, where workers will remove and replace concrete pavement and rework the base material; the three corners of the Highway 121 and Interstate 35E frontage road interchange, where workers will remove and replace the concrete pavement; and the north and southbound tollway main lanes between the I-35E interchange and Hebron Parkway, where workers will complete full-depth repair of the pavement at joints.

The first closings include two northeast-bound lanes on the tollway frontage road east of MacArthur and will be closed from 9 a.m., May 14 through 9 a.m. June 22. Also, two southwest-bound lanes on the tollway frontage road west of Lake Vista Drive will be closed from 9 a.m. May 14, through 9 a.m. June 8.

The cities impacted by the pavement repair project include Lewisville and Coppell. Lane closures will be continuous at various times while work takes place. Slupecki said the contractor will place changeable message signs (CMS) at the approved locations to alert motorists seven days prior to any closure for major impact, or 48 hours prior to any closure for routine impact. Closure information will be available in the "Lane/Ramp Closures" listings at www.ntta.org or by calling 214-224-3030.

"In July 2006, Sam Rayburn Tollway Segment I (from Denton Tap Road to Old Denton Road) and formally known as State Highway 121 main lanes and frontage roads opened to traffic by TxDOT. On Sept. 1, 2008, NTTA took over maintenance responsibilities for both the main lanes and frontage roads of State Highway 121," Slupecki said. "NTTA field inspections have since identified areas within Segment I of SRT and the SRT frontage roads (SH 121) with pavement issues which, if left to deteriorate, could result in potentially hazardous travel conditions for the public."

The project is being funded out of the 2012 reserve maintenance fund. Throughout the project, NTTA will announce road closures that could impact travel in Driving Forward, the agency's monthly customer e-newsletter that is emailed and also posted on NTTA's website https://www.ntta.org/newsresources.
