'A Musical Journey' to feature Dallas chorale, Little Elm chorus Sunday

When it comes to singing, it's about spirit and community, not just experience.
The Little Elm Community Chorus will open for the Turtle Creek Chorale Chamber Chorus at the upcoming performance of "A Musical Journey," a fundraiser benefitting the Lakeside Arts Foundation. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater in the Grand Performance Hall, 100 North Charles St.
The concert will be the first for the Little Elm Community Chorus, which just began its program this past February with the endorsement of the Little Elm Cultural Arts Council. Community Chorus Director Stan Hayes described the invitation to sing with the Turtle Creek Chorale as something "out of the clear blue."
The Turtle Creek Chorale Chamber Chorus will showcase its 40-member all-male ensemble out of its main 150-plus-member group at the concert this weekend. The Dallas-based chorale has traveled to Europe and has made appearances at Carnegie Hall as well as several other notable performances across the country.
The Little Elm Community Chorus group of roughly 15 members was chosen to sing with the Turtle Creek Chorale Chamber Chorus after the Lewisville Civic Chorus was unable to attend the event. Hayes said the purpose of the concert was to encourage community chorus singing, which Little Elm fit that bill perfectly.
"It will allow my chorus, who has never sung a concert together, to have that experience singing before people," Hayes said. "It's an opportunity to let the general public know that there is a chorus that has started knows what we're doing."
The community chorus, which is comprised of people from Little Elm and the surrounding communities, will sing "God Bless America," "What a Wonderful World," "Let There be Peace on Earth," and its most difficult yet entertaining piece "Banquet Fugue" from John Rutter's "The Reluctant Dragon."
" [Banquet Fugue] sounds very chaotic and eventually comes [together] to the end," Hayes said. "It's the most difficult piece we're going to do, but the most fun."
The concert will benefit the Lakeside Arts Foundation, which is non-profit organization in The Colony that promotes and supports local fine arts organizations. LAF President Christi Martin helped put Sunday's concert together for the local communities and has supported the Little Elm Community Chorus in preparations for the event.
The Turtle Creek Chamber Chorus will feature double tenor and double bass singers at the concert. Turtle Creek Chorale Interim Assistant Conductor Sean Baugh will be conducting the evening event, which will include well-known songs from Broadway to spiritual pieces. The concert is family-friendly.
"I've seen them [the Chorale] a couple of times. They put in tremendous amounts of time," Hayes said.
The Community Chorus will perform in the future at the Arts and Sounds by the Lake festival on May 19 and will perform with the Voices of Flower Mound at a 9/11 ceremony in September. The group will hold its last rehearsal before Sunday's concert from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the Button Memorial United Methodist Church in Little Elm.
Hayes said the group will hold auditions in the future to add more people. Participants in the chorus are required to re-audition every year. Hayes hopes the chorus will grow to include 50-70 men and women singers.
"We're serious about having fun, but we're also serious about having it done well," Hayes said.
Tickets to the weekend performance are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. For ticket information, call 972-625-1726 or visit www.lakesidearts.org. Public parking is available for free along Main and Church streets or at Lewisville City Hall.
