The Little Elm Lions Club recognized local young artists last week during its reception for the Drug Awareness Poster Contest. All four first-place winners placed at the district level.
During the reception, 22 students placed in the contest, which asked them to submit posters featuring the theme on dangers and/or consequences in the use of drugs or tobacco. Winners were picked based on the poster's quality of work, clarity of message, originality and spelling.
Increasing in participants for the last three years, 800 posters were submitted into the contest.
"This group, they understand that drugs do nothing but bad for you," Garst said.
The Lions also recognized Lakeview Elementary School art teacher Jessica Sides, Zellars Elementary art teacher Vanessa Griffin, Lakeside Middle School art teachers Trenton League and Lisa McClellan and Little Elm High School art teacher Mark Parr for their support and effort in the contest.
The Lions have been participating in this contest for over 20 years.
"We really appreciate the Lions Club for their support," said Julie Zwahr, LEISD Communications director.
Lions Club member and Lion Tamer Jane Schoknecht and District Drug Awareness President and Lions Club member Jack Parkin presented the awards to the students. In the fourth grade division, McKenzie Matthews took home first place for her poster; Rhiannon Adams, Kevin Santana, Terri Jones and Jordan Roemmich also placed.
In the fifth- and sixth-grade division, first place was awarded to Lauren Burton. Those who also placed include Tony Worton, Dylan Weand, Jasmine Villarveal, Kales Dailey, Carla Reza and Jose Juarez.
Eighth-grader Celeste Ortiz won first place in the seventh- through ninth-grade division. Julia Bowen, Amanda Rodriguez, Jennifer Gerrato and Torie Carrell were also recognized for their posters.
In the last division of 10th- through 12th-grades artists, sophomore Laura Warner was awarded first place. The other winners included Luke Taylor, Christopher Farrel, Selena Gutlerrez and Josh Harris.
First-place winners in each division had their artwork submitted to the district level. All four placed at district in January at the Lions District 2-E2 Midwinter Conference. Fourth-grader Matthews, eighth-grader Ortiz and sophomore Warner took first place in their categories, and sixth-grader Burton won second place in hers.
First-place winners were given a $200 savings bond, and the second-place winner was awarded a $100 savings bond.
