Lucha Libre headed to area

Published: Wednesday, March 21, 2012 11:29 PM CDT
Lots of masks, pageantry and high flying acrobatics are about to invade the Mesquite Arena on April 22, when Luche Libre USA’s Masked Warriors Live Tour heads into the Metroplex.

Luche Libre is a style of professional wrestling that originated in Mexico.

“We are really proud to be bringing our show to the Mesquite Arena,” said Steven Ship, CEO of Luche Libre USA. “We wanted to work hard to create a show unlike anything anyone has seen before.”

The show had two of its Luchastars, Shane Helms and AJ Brewer, in town on Tuesday, March 20, to help promote the event.

Helms has had a long career in the wrestling industry and is best known for his stints in World Wrestling Entertainment as The Hurricane, a masked superhero gimmick. Helms was the longest reigning cruiserweight champion in the organizations history.

“When I left WWE a lot of doors opened for me but when Luche Libre USA came calling the decision kind of made itself for me,” Helms said.

He said that when he first became involved with the company he made the decision to wrestle without his trademark mask.

“I made the strange decision to take the mask off. I realize now I shouldn’t have made that decision. People love that mask. For this tour I will be bringing the mask back,” Helms said.

Helms said the luche libre style various from what he did in the past and he has had to adjust his style since coming to the company.

“The style is decidedly different. The aerial style is something you can’t prepare for until you actually see it. One of the things that helped me succeed as The Hurricane was that I incorporated some of it [into my repertoire],” Helms said.

Brewer claims to be the son of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and has made it his mission to unmask and send the luchadors back to Mexico, where he claims they belong.

“I do not represent Luche Libre USA,” Brewer said. “I represent the city of Phoenix and support stronger border control. I am here to get rid of the mask because it does not belong here in the USA.”

The addition of Luche Libre to the arena’s lineup of events further diversifies the programming being offered at the Mesquite Arena.

“I am finding out more and more about this event. This is a great fit for the city of Mesquite and Mesquite Arena,” said John Monaco, Mesquite Mayor.

The company has reached out to Big Brothers and Big Sisters to help the organization with their fundraising efforts.

“They are a great organization and we are proud to be associated with them. We have worked with each chapter to raise funds and bring attention to their cause,” Ship said. “There will be several activities with them throughout the night.”

Monaco was very supportive of the company’s involvement with Big Brothers and Big Sisters program.

“I am very excited about that. My city manager has been involved with the organization for a number of years,” Monaco said.

“Luche Libre USA is a great company and I am proud to be a part of it,” Helms said.

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 at Mesquite Arena, 1818 Rodeo Drive. Tickets range from $20 to $50 and can be purchased through ticketmaster.com or at the arena box office. The ticket price includes free preshow entertainment. The doors will open at 6 p.m. for the event. For information on the tour, visit www.maskedwarriors.com.
