Wondering what you can do to help fight cancer, raise cancer awareness, honor a cancer survivor, or remember a loved one lost to cancer? Come to the Allen Relay For Life next Friday evening, May 18, for a family-friendly celebration where you can celebrate life with Allen-area residents at the Allen high school track. Listen to bands, play games, purchase and decorate a luminaria, and support other fund-raising options such as baked goods, raffle, concessions.

Allen Mayor Stephen Terrell will be on hand at the beginning of the event to walk the Survivor Lap at 6:00 p.m. and make presentations to participants raising the most funds.

The Survivor Lap is open to all Allen-area residents cancer survivors. There is also a special segment for cancer caregivers. Allen Relay For Life wants to raise awareness of cancer, raise funds for cancer research, honor survivors, and remember those lost to cancer. Each year Allen RFL has numerous events for survivors leading up to the annual relay. This year’s Survivor Banquet featured guest entertainer Elvis.

Another aspect of this year’s RFL is the opportunity to donate a length of hair to Beautiful Lengths which will be turned into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer. They need hair that is a minimum of eight inches long, free of permanent color, bleach, and chemical treatments. Hair must be less than 5% gray. A team of trimmers will be cutting hair on site at the RFL Friday evening.

Over 750 neighbors make up the 75 teams who are walking throughout the night for the 12-hour relay. The walk begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday, May 18, and ends at 6:00 a.m. Saturday, May 19 with a pancake breakfast for the participants. Entertainment by live bands will end around 11:00 p.m., but a disc jockey will play tunes all night long.

The Luminaria Ceremony will be at dark, 9:30 p.m. Individuals purchase luminaria in honor or memory of loved ones. You can decorate the bags if you wish. The bags will be on sale that evening or they can be purchased online until May 17 at http://www.RelayForLife.org/Allentx. Hundreds of bags will be lighted at dark in a touching ceremony. The luminaria glow through the nighttime hours.

Jon Christopher Davis, raised in North Texas, wrote the theme song for the national Relay For Life. He will be on hand next week to perform it in person along with other music. Other musical groups include Red Angel Theory, Radiant Fallout, Kelsey Lewis, and Mpowered/Kidstand.

For the 750 walkers, the Allen Relay For Life is about giving back to the Allen community. The general public can aid this cause by supporting the ‘block party’ atmosphere of the opening ceremony and evening agenda. Registration opens at 4:30 p.m., the walk starts at 6:00 at the Allen high school track. Parking is free.
