Girls basketball: Frenship awaits The Colony in bi-district round
BY JUSTIN THOMAS, jthomas@acnpapers.com
Terra Ellison's "unbelievable" effort paced The Colony's girls basketball team Tuesday as the Lady Cougars will enter the postseason with momentum following a 46-24 victory over Denton.
Ellison outscored the Lady Broncos on her own with 25 points and the Lady Cougars held the advantage in each of the four quarters, including a 28-12 run during the second and third quarters.
Denton had everything to play for as well as it is fighting for a postseason berth. The Lady Broncos will now face Little Elm in a play-in game Friday in The Colony to determine the final 4-4A playoff representative.
Defense again reigned Friday, but offense was mot up to par as the Lady Cougars came up short against Rider, 36-30. With the new district realignments, it could be the last trip The Colony has to make to Wichita Falls
"I have no problem with not having to go play in Wichita Falls, Texas, ever again," Weese said.
The Colony was playing without the services of Kylie Covington, but Megan Francisco and Dre Robinson were there to pick up the slack.
"Megan came in and did a great job at point guard," Weese said. "She and Dre are two seniors that stepped up and had two great games to close the regular season. They played tremendous, and that's been very pleasing to me to see those two classy young ladies play well on their senior nights."
The Lady Cougars were within one at 31-30 in the fourth but were unable to gain the advantage as Wichita Falls was content to hold the ball for a majority of the final quarter.
The Colony opens the playoffs with a bi-district contest against Wolfforth Frenship at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Clyde.
"We're hitting the road," Weese said. "We're going to pack our bags and get after them. It's going to be a tough game; Frenship is talented. And it's kind of personal to me. That's where I graduated high school, so it would be real sweet to win that one."
While the squads didn't face off during the regular season, Weese got a chance to see Frenship in action on one of The Colony's nights off.
"We're going to have to get to the shooters to contest and get on the boards," he said. "If we can hit shots, we'll be right there. It's one of those games where whoever is playing the best that night is going to win."
