Boys basketball: Cougars snap Denton Ryan's win streak

Published: Wednesday, January 4, 2012 7:14 PM CST
For the first time in more than a year, Denton Ryan's boys basketball team suffered a defeat in District 4-4A competition.

The Raiders had their 37-game district win-streak snapped Tuesday at the hands of The Colony, 57-49. The streak dated back to Jan. 11, 2010, when Ryan lost The Colony -- who went on to reach the semifinals of the 4A state tourney.

Holding a healthy lead midway through the fourth, Ryan tried to play the fouling game. However, the Cougars were up to the task, converting enough attempts to hold on for the win.

"That was a big win for us," said Cleve Ryan, The Colony coach. "Ryan has a good team and was good to get a win in district coming back from the break. We had a good margin and they started fouling. I maybe would have liked to have seen us make a few more free throws, but we made enough to get the win."

Ryan was also pleased with the balanced effort the Cougars displayed.

"We won it as a group," he said. "We had several guys contributing in different areas."

After a sluggish third quarter that saw the Cougars outscore the Raiders, 10-9, The Colony held the advantage in the fourth, 23-22.

Zach Leday paced the squad with 15 points, while Damion McIntosh posted 14 and Bobby White contributed 10. Antoine Burrell and Kendall Jones chipped in seven apiece.

The team had previously earned its first win in district Saturday cruising past Lake Dallas, 84-34.

The Colony had 11 players in the scoring column, including 18 from Leday, 12 from Jones and 10 each from Steven Hedrington and White.

The Cougars held a 40-9 advantage at halftime.

The two wins in district came on the heels of a second-place performance Dec. 27-29 at The Colony Cougar Classic where Leday was selected to the all-tournament team. The squad won its first three contests before coming up short in the finals against Hebron, 66-55. The team notched victories over Leander (60-38), Grapevine (63-53) and Flower Mound (53-45).

In addition to his solid performance in the tournament, Leday made a college commitment to play at the University of South Florida.

"It's a great honor for him," Ryan said. "I know it was a very long process for him, but also a process that he really enjoyed. He visited several places and had a lot of interest."
