Volleyball: Smoking Aces: Lady Cougars serve way to win

Published: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 5:45 PM CDT
After a subpar effort Oct. 4 in a loss against Lake Dallas (), The Colony's volleyball team bounced back Friday cruising to a win over Denton () to remain in a tie for second in District 4-4A.

Lake Dallas (8-0) is in control of first, while the Lady Cougars (5-3) are tied with Denton Ryan (5-3) for second with a matchup against the Lady Raiders coming up Friday. The Colony swept Ryan in their first meeting.

"We didn't play very well against Lake Dallas," said Terri Harrod, The Colony coach. "Lake Dallas is a good team, but we didn't come ready to play. We weren't focused and when we fell behind, it was one of those things where we didn't give a great effort and kind of had a 'we can't do this' attitude. We had a lot of errors and everything kind of snowballed."

But on Tuesday the squad rebounded on the strength of an outstanding service performance. The Colony totaled 13 aces as a squad in the three sets, including seven from Amanda Colegrove. Additionally, Lauren Ranney, Tori Hawk and Madison Gill contributed two aces apiece.

"Our serve helped us control the match," Harrod said. "We kept the ball on our side of the court and went on some solid runs."

The Lady Cougars also benefitted from a balanced offense that saw Stacy Koch record six kills, Sarah Hymes post five and Gill notch four.

"Everyone chipped in for us on offense," Harrod said.

Gill and Hawk paced the squad with 15 and 14 digs, respectively, while Ranney had 18 assists.

"We didn't have a high amount of digs and it wasn't a big blocking night for us," Harrod said. "But a lot of that was because of how much we were controlling the match with our serve. It was a big bounce-back match for us."

Now The Colony looks to seize command of second in district with a win Friday over Ryan.

"We swept them the first time but everyone has gotten better since then," Harrod said.
