Hurst outlines election platform

Published: Wednesday, April 11, 2012 4:59 PM CDT
Alan Hurst said he has built his campaign for Place 2 on the Allen ISD Board of Trustees around three core principles: open communication, fiscal responsibility and unwavering commitment to students.

Hurst, president of the Waterford Trails Homeowner's Association since 2008, said his experience representing 200 homeowners and volunteering through Cottonwood Creek Baptist Church, Cheatham Elementary and programs such as Adopt a Highway qualifies him to help lead the district.

In the realm of school finance, Hurst said the district should work on managing its income and expenses so last year's historic state funding cuts do not threaten the jobs of teachers.

While AISD has incurred debt and raised taxes to keep up with the growing needs of the district, Hurst said, the board should still consider reductions in non-instructional expenditures.

"I think the district's done some good things, and now we're moving forward with that," he said. "I want to help offer some new leadership to the school district that preserves what is good while adding some experience and skill to guide our way through some big issues."

Hurst said there is some room for improvement at the board level in the area of open communication, noting that certain issues that have recently packed board meetings to capacity could have been communicated better from the board's perspective.

The issue that has boosted board meeting attendance more than any other has been the issue of AISD service center, planned to be built at Watters Road and Bossy Boots Drive in Northwest Allen.

Hurst, who lives about a mile from the proposed site, said he is waiting for the results of the district's environmental study and the inquiry into the financial implications of decoupling the facility before he formulates an opinion as to whether or not it should be built.

"I wouldn't be opposed to decoupling, and my main goal is that if we're going to have a facility for Allen that it serves the students and serves everyone in the district," he said.

Hurst and his wife, Holly, have lived in Allen for nearly nine years. They have two children, both of whom attend Cheatham Elementary. He is a regional manager for Alpha Pro Tech, a company that manufactures personal protective equipment.
