11-5A SOFTBALL: Horn, Mesquite, North sweep top three spots
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Mesquite ISD's dominance continued in the 11-5A softball race, as the three MISD schools once again swept the top three spots in the district race.
Horn completed an undefeated run to the 11-5A championship with a 9-6 victory over Mesquite in eight innings on Tuesday.
The Jaguars (10-0) pounded out eight extra-base hits and 17 hits in all. Mesquite (8-2) rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the sixth inning to force extras, but Horn responded with three runs in the top of the eighth and Ashley Moore got out of a jam with the tying run at the plate to end the game.
The Stallions had several hitting stars, led by Tiara Mickens and Katelyn White, who each had a double and a triple. Haylie Campbell and Kelsey Peters each tripled, while Paige Stevens added a double.
Paige Draughn earned the win on the mound for North Mesquite.
The final playoff berth from the district was scheduled to be decided between Tyler Lee and Longview.
The three MISD teams now have some time on their hands. The regular season does not end for most districts until this Friday, meaning the Class 5A playoffs will not get started until later next week.
FRIDAY: Horn, Mesquite set up showdown for district title
The stage is set for the Horn and Mesquite softball teams.
The Jaguars and Skeeters each took care of business on Friday to set up a showdown for the 11-5A championship.
Horn, who is still perfect at 9-0 after an 18-0 rout of Tyler Lee, has clinched at least a share of the title due to its earlier with over Mesquite. The Skeeters (8-1) are hoping to force a tie for the 11-5A crown when they get their rematch on Tuesday at the Mesquite Girls Softball Complex.
Neither team had any issues looking ahead.
The Jaguars had 11 hits and took advantage of a generous Tyler Lee defense that committed 13 errors. Ashley Moore was the winning pitcher, while Hayley LeMonds was the star on offense with a home run and a triple.
The Skeeters enjoyed similar success in their 17-0 victory over DeSoto. Victoria Bice threw a two-hitter and had a triple at the plate.
Bailey Stokes belted a home run and Halee Pryor added a double for Mesquite, which had 13 hits in the game.
North Mesquite improved to 5-4 in district play and locked up the third seed in the playoffs with a 10-6 victory over Longview.
The two teams combined for 24 hits, including 14 for the Stallions. Haylie Campbell and Katelyn White each doubled, while Paige Draughn earned the win on the mound.
