WEB EXCLUSIVE: Thrice as Nice: Lady Panthers three-peat as district track champs
BY Matt Welch, mwelch@starlocalnews.com
FLOWER MOUND -- No lead was safe in the District 8-5A Boys Track and Field Championships Thursday from Flower Mound Marcus.
Three teams possessed the lead during the two-day meet, with eventual 8-5A boys champion Hebron not pulling ahead until the evening's penultimate race.
"It's very gratifying," said Jason Grennier, Hebron head coach. "It's our first district championship at the 5A level. We have a great group of seniors; this is the first group I've had since they worked their way up through middle school.
In ascending to the 8-5A throne, the Hawks finished the night with 133 points, nudging past second-place Allen (127.33) and back-to-back defending champ Plano East (125).
That same mantra applied to East on the girls side and as was the case in 2010 and 2011, the Lady Panthers came, saw and conquered -- cruising to the team's third consecutive 8-5A championship with 175 points.
"We've got great senior leadership," said Chris Lillie, East head coach. "... We have a great senior core and they all did a great job this year and these past three years as well. We're really proud of them."
East finished well ahead of its opposition, outlasting Marcus (141) and Hebron (96) in the girls draw.
Plenty of Hawks and Panthers will be on hand in two weeks for the Region I Meet on April 27-28 from Texas Tech University, as the top-three finishers in each district event qualified for regionals.
