Rowlett CERT called to action
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
When storms raged through the Metroplex last Tuesday, Rowlett CERT began staging to assist people in need of help. The team stood by waiting for a call from emergency officials in Rowlett to spring into action. The call came but it was an all-clear call, meaning there was nothing extensive within the city that necessitated the skills of the group.
Another call came in to the group. The call was from Rockwall County Emergency Operations Center’s Joe Ellis.
“Joe Ellis asked us to round up our CERT team and head to their command post,” said Whitney Lanning, Rowlett Citizen Corps Council president. “We had already been staging because we thought we might be needed for damage here in Rowlett. We took a team of 24 people out to Rockwall County and stayed out for one and a half hours until they released us.”
“The county was receiving donations from various groups and needed to know where to distribute those donations,” Lanning said.
The CERT team was called again on Friday to assist victims in Lancaster where more than 300 homes were damaged by the tornadic activity that happened in south Dallas County.
“We sent a team of 12 people who partnered with seven people from Sachse to travel to Lancaster. We were there from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We were identifying what debris needed to be moved. The second stage of what we did there involved moving the debris to the street to allow the city to remove it,” Lanning said.
He added that one of the Lancaster storm victims referred to CERT team member Scott Hart as an “angel in a hard hat” for the work the team did in the community.
“That comment really encapsulates the best of our volunteers. We are all about helping neighbors,” Lanning said.
