Senior health fair aims to assist seniors
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
The health needs of senior citizens continue to be an area of concern for residents in Dallas County. To address this need the Rowlett Senior Advisory Board is hosting its annual free senior health fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the Rowlett Community Centre, 5300 Main Street.
“This is the third time we have had the health fair,” said Bobbie Jo Kelly, advisory board chairwoman. “We hope to attract seniors from all over the area to the event.”
Kelly said the concept of the health fair was to assist seniors with obtaining information they may not be aware of within the community.
Kelly said that the event will have approximately 42 vendors this year. She added that the board tried to make sure there was a diverse selection of vendors so that there wouldn’t be too much of one type of service featured.
The board is planning to reserve several additional handicapped spaces for disabled seniors and will provide free golf cart shuttle service to the front door from the parking lot for any attendee that would like it.
“We will have the extra handicapped parking set aside just for the health fair,” Kelly said.
The event has had a various number of attendees, with a small decline last year. The board made the decision this year to move the event to a Saturday to attract a more diverse group of vendors and to hopefully increase attendance.
“We had several doctors that wanted to participate in the past but could not close their practice down during the week to attend the event. This allows them the chance to participate,” Kelly said.
She said that there will be several new vendors at the event this year as a result of the change from a Tuesday to a Saturday.
The event will offer numerous health screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index screenings. Kelly said there are lots of door prizes that will be handed out by vendors as well as a few snack items.
“The seniors that attend the fair will come away with some very valuable information. A lot of it will be stuff they may not have thought of before. This event is very important. With all the changes in Medicare seniors need to know where they can get some of these tests. Medical costs are rising and Medicare is not going to cover all of the cost,” Kelly said.
