Southlake DPS to participate in the Medal of Honor Recipient Motorcade

Published: Tuesday, April 10, 2012 12:10 PM CDT
Southlake Department of Public Safety (DPS) will take part in the largest Medal of Honor recipient motorcade Wednesday.

Organizers of the motorcade estimate that the motorcade will stretch 7 to 8 miles long with more than 400 vehicles participating and 13 different agencies. The motorcade is expected to leave the DFW Airport between 3 and 4 p.m. The motorcade will start from the parking lot at Highway 114 and Freeport Parkway and travel to Gainesville.

"It is such a tremendous honor for the men and women of Southlake DPS, many who are veterans themselves, to be a part of this annual event to honor our nation's veterans," said Southlake DPS Police Chief Stephen Mylett. "They proudly served our country and they deserve our unwavering support and gratitude."

When the honor ride first began, Southlake was the first motor unit to participate. Southlake has been listed as lead motors and probably will again, said Kim Leach, Southlake DPS spokeswoman.

"The motorcade is a great expression of gratitude to these living Heroes and our public safety agencies are proud to be participating," said Deputy Constable King who coordinates the escort.

Organizers are asking residents to be aware of traffic delays along the motorcade route. Public safety agencies are requesting that residents pull to the right shoulder when approached from behind. Residents are also welcome to line up along the route and show support.

Additionally, some parts of Highways 114 and 121 and many access points will be temporarily shut down as agencies work to get the motorcade onto the roadway and these honored guests to DFW on their way.
