On Saturday and Sunday, the Frisco Square will be transformed into a showroom as the Third Annual Arts in the Square Festival kicks-off.

The free event which runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days will begin with unveiling of the Arts in the Square Student Poster Contest on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Frisco Discovery Center.

The poster contest was open to students of all ages ranging from elementary to high school and even students at the Career and Technical Education Center participated in the event.

"Last semester the art students within elementary, junior high and high school of the Frisco Independent School District submitted art pieces," Paige Scheer, owner of Scheer Mattlage, Extraordinary Events said. "Judges went through and they submitted the top four; they picked one from elementary, junior high and a couple from high school. Then ... those top four pieces that were the winners -- we gave to the graphics students at CTEC and they incorporated those four pieces ... into a poster that we used to market the event."

About 60 FISD students and 30 CTEC students from the graphic design and illustration program entered the contest.

"Friday night ... is when we present the award winners for student contest that we ran," Cathy Sweeney, Partner for the Frisco Square said. "Which has everything to do with promoting Arts in the Square, and what we do is we hold a contest for students to design our poster for the event which we put around town, and a logo, and all that. On Friday night we'll be awarding that and having sort of a kick off event for the artists themselves."

Scheer added the posters have been on display at the Discovery Center for the month of March.

The weekend Arts in the Square event will showcase the work of 124 professional artists.

According to the event's website www.friscosquare.com, "The artists will compete in the following categories: 2D Mixed Media, 3D Mixed Media, Acrylics, Ceramics, Drawings, Pastels, Fiber art, Glass, Jewelry, Leather, Metalwork, Oil, Photography, Sculpture, Watercolor, and Wood."

The website also lists the judging panel which includes: Diana Moya, Allison Jernigan, D.K. Richardson, Scott Trent, Mandy Meadows, Lucille Cole Carter, and Dr. Raul M. Oyuela.

"There's a jury ... and they [artists] enter in different categories and we have a formal juried contest," Sweeney said. "We have selected judges who know what their doing and the artists enroll in a certain category. There will be judging and awards for that."

Sweeney said the competition may be what "attracts" artists to Frisco, but the entertainment provided at the event will please the visitors.

"From a community perspective, there's time to view a lot of the stuff, there will be some activities, some bands, songs and music, and a little kids play area," Sweeney said. "Stroll in your own town square and shop and eat and sit out and listen to some music and watch the arts and just have a good time."

Music at the event will be provided by the Collin County Songwriters Association as well as Next Step Dance Studio.

Sweeney added that attendees will have the opportunity to talk to the artists about their work in the artist's booth and some of the artists she said will be creating work at the event as well.

The art event is also sponsored in conjunction with the Frisco Arts Association, who will host a fundraising gala, "Frisco Arts Fever Annual Fundraising Gala 2012," on Saturday, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Frisco Discovery Center.
