Collin County Sheriff Terry Box celebrated his victory in the Republican primary on Tuesday night, as he led the three-candidate race with 69 percent of the vote.
Box credited his staff for the win, lightheartedly noting their hard work at making the sheriff's office "run so well because it makes me look good."
The lifelong McKinney resident began his career in 1968 with the city of McKinney and in 1971 with the Plano Police Department. Box joined the Collin County Sheriff's Department in 1981, and was appointed sheriff four years later.
"It gives me a good feeling that we are going in the right direction. We are doing a lot of new things and keeping up today with technology and doing what we should be doing," Box said. "The citizens are smart and are seeing what we are doing in our office. We keep the public pretty well informed as to what's going on. "
Precinct 3 Constable Charles "Chuck" Presley Sr. trailed with approximately 16 percent, while opponent Mike Brooks also carried 15 percent of the vote. Presley, who lives in Allen with his wife Lana and joined the Allen police force 30 years ago, called Box around 8:30 Tuesday evening to congratulate him on his win. Presley was unable to be reached for comment.
With 24 years of experience with the El Paso Police Department and four years of experience in the private sector, Brooks said he believed he had what it took to be Collin County's sheriff for the next four years. Brooks moved to McKinney four and a half years ago and works for a company that investigates organized theft of cargo, heavy machinery and major warehouses.
Brooks attributed his short residency, the delayed primary date and traveling related to his job to his shortfall, and said while he was thankful for the experience, he will continue to be a part of the community through other avenues such as his job and local youth sports.
"It just kept dragging on," he said of the election. "Mr. Box is tough, he's been here a long time. He's done a lot for the community. I congratulate him, we just have different view on law enforcement, but he's well known in community and does a lot for it. I have no hard feelings for him or Mr. Presley. I've met a lot of great people in this thing, from candidates to voters."
