Mesquite to showcase trail system

Published: Thursday, May 24, 2012 11:18 AM CDT
The city of Mesquite is proud of its trails system and wants to show them off. As part of its efforts to bring awareness to the trails system, the parks and recreation department are planning an event to celebrate National Trails Day from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 2 at Paschall Park, 1001 New Market Road.

“It’s a nationwide celebration of trails. The event is designed to bring awareness to our trails and gives us an opportunity to introduce the residents of Mesquite to our trail system,” said Alyssa Smith, parks and recreation marketing specialist.

The city decided to make its first stab at an event honoring National Trails Day after several emails were received promoting events in other cities.

“We received the emails about it and decided we would try it out,” Smith said. “We decided since this was our first go at this we would keep the event rather small.”

The event’s activities will center on a scavenger hunt throughout the 1.55 mile trail at the park. The parks and recreation department will prepare the event as a geocache challenge so that those who enjoy using GPS-enabled devices to find hidden containers will have a chance to participate.

“We will hide containers throughout the park and ask people to go and find them,” Smith said.

Prizes and awards will be given away throughout the event.

The main goal of the event is to show the benefits of the city’s trail system to Mesquite residents.

“We want to promote good physical and mental health,” Smith said. “This is the chance to come out for some fresh air and do something during the day to get you heart going,” Smith said. “People should come out bring their picnic lunch and enjoy our parks system while we showcase our trails.”

The city also invites residents to come out and take a stroll down the Butterfly Trail at the park during the event. For information on the National Trails Day celebration, call 972-216-6260 or visit the city’s website at www.cityofmesquite.com.
