West Mesquite was hoping to move up the ranks in 10-4A volleyball on Tuesday, but despite its best effort, it fell a little short.

The Wranglers fought out of holes time and time again but finally ran out of comebacks in a 25-12, 19-25, 25-11, 25-21 loss to North Forney at West Mesquite High School.

West Mesquite falls to 1-3 in district play, while the Falcons join them in a tie for fifth place.

"Overall I thought we played well," West Mesquite head coach Lisa Williams said. "We are getting better every match and every game."

The Wranglers showed some fighting spirit. After North Forney rolled to a 25-12 win in the opening game, West Mesquite answered, grabbing the early lead and never relinquishing it in a 25-19 game two victory.

The third game was much like the first, with the Falcons in control throughout en route to a 25-11 win.

North Forney pushed ahead midway through game four, but even on match point, the Wranglers kept battling. West Mesquite fought off five match points before the Falcons finally put them away to end the match.

"The girls are fighting hard every day and that is one of the things we have instilled in the program is not giving up," Williams said. "The girls believe in themselves. They work hard and fight until the end."

In the opening game, West Mesquite hung close early and a pair of kills from Kametria Clayton got them to within 8-6. However, North Forney reeled off the next eight points to blow the game open. Clayton served a pair of points and Debby Ukadike had a pair of blocks at the net, but it was not enough.

The second game was a much different story.

Ukadike had an early block and an ace from Jalen Gunter helped the Wranglers jump to a 4-1 lead. An ace from Alexus Franklin kept West Mesquite in the lead and Rebecca Bustamante served a pair of points to make it 10-6.

North Forney scored the next three points and it remained close until Bustamante had a three-point serving run that gave the Wranglers a 19-14 lead.

The Falcons hung around, but points from Gunter, Franklin and Aaryn Gallegos helped West Mesquite close out the 25-19 win to even the match at one game each.

The Wranglers used an ace from Franklin to tie game three at 7-7, but North Forney countered with a four-point run to take the lead. Another long service run made it 20-10 and the Falcons cruised from there.

North Forney jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth game but strong serving from Bustamante, Franklin and Dominique Valentine helped West Mesquite claw back to within 12-11.

A kill from Ukadike made it 16-15 but the Falcons then scored eight of the next nine points to reach match point. Bustamante again stepped behind the service line and helped the Wranglers get back to within 24-21, but North Forney was finally able to convert on the sixth match point to seal the win.

While West Mesquite missed out on a chance to move into a tie for fourth place, Williams believes the team is making strides and they are confident moving forward

"We're still in the playoff race; it is so spread out right now it is going to come down to who fights the hardest," she said. "We have been playing better, we got better during the Poteet match, we just need to stay healthy and keep playing together. We need to surprise some people along the way and take care of business in between."

The Pirates were not able to parlay Friday's win over West Mesquite into success on Tuesday as they were swept by Highland Park, 25-16, 25-10, 25-10.
