Cadets from Troop 8737 collect used eyewear for OneSight Charities.
Members of Girl Scout Troop 8737 collected and donated over 120 pairs of used eyewear during the month of October. OneSight makes sure the glasses and sunglasses are cleaned, repaired and adjusted before they are labeled and packaged for distribution. Recipients are given an exam by a licensed eye doctor and the glasses are fitted by trained volunteers.
The Troop decided to focus their service projects on eye health after they lost their teacher to Ocular Melanoma in 2011. "We wanted to do something special to honor our teacher," said Jessica Genovese. "I had a lot of people donate glasses. It was neat to see the good response I got." Jessica contacted family, friends and members of her martial arts school for assistance.
OneSight is a family of charitable programs dedicated to improving vision through outreach, research and education. Since 1988, OneSight has helped millions see their world more clearly and donated millions of dollars to support optical research and education. OneSight needs 2 million pairs of donated glasses per year to keep up with demand.
