Santa Claus is coming to town: Prosper Christmas Festival will be held Sunday

Published: Thursday, December 6, 2012 2:40 PM CST
Santa Claus will be on hand Sunday to spread holiday cheer at the Prosper Christmas Festival, a free holiday event which will take place from 2 – 6 p.m. downtown along Broadway Street, between Coleman and Main.

The festival will open with the second annual Prosper Rotary Christmas Parade, which will feature about 30 floats from a collection of city businesses and organizations, including the Prosper Town Council and Grace Church. The parade will be led by the Celina High School band and will also feature horses from Prospering Farms, a local equestrian facility.

The parade will last about 30 minutes and travel along Parvin Street, Broadway and McKinley Street.

Floats will be judged by a three-person panel and the first-prize winner will be awarded $300. The second place float will receive $100. The judging panel will include Collin County commissioner Matt Shaheen, who represents Celina.

“The parade is the official start of the Prosper Christmas Festival,” said parade chair Todd Lehmann in a release about the festival. “We think it’s an important part of the festival, giving the town the opportunity to come together and celebrate the start of the Christmas holiday season.”

In addition to the parade, the holiday festival will feature pony rides, a petting zoo, strolling carolers, bounce houses, a barrel train and a skating rink. The 2,000 square foot skating rink will be made of a synthetic material that mimics ice.

Santa will also be on hand to take pictures and listen to present requests.

Admission is free, though there will be food, drink and crafts for sale. Free parking and shuttles will be available from the parking lot at Reynolds Middle School, which is located at 700 North Coleman Road.

The festival will also include performances from several Prosper ISD school choirs, kids and adult choirs from local churches, an amateur guitar ensemble and the new gospel quartet Servants Sound, which was started recently at First Baptist Church in McKinney. Servants Sounds will perform at 4:45 p.m.

“It would simply not be Christmas without the music that we have all come to love and cherish,” said festival chair Beth Larsen. “Kids’ voices and adults’ voices will help bring the holiday spirit to the festival.”

Entries for the parade are still being accepted and an application can be found at www.prosperrotary.org. There is a $50 fee for entry. For more information on the festival, visit www.prospertx.gov or email specialevent@prospertx.org
