Technology leftovers: Recycling electronics important for environment

In the age of technology electronic items have become the norm in our daily lives. When an electronic item has outlived its usefulness the responsible way to dispose of it is through recycling.
“The best part about this event for us is that [recyclable] stuff is getting brought in and taken care of,” said Cheryl Harris, Keep Rowlett Beautiful secretary. “You would be surprised at some of the things we get. Some of these items people have had for 30 years.”
Keep Rowlett Beautiful is hosting its bi-annual electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 in a parking lot in the 2200 block of Lakeview Parkway near Home Depot.
“Keeping Rowlett Beautiful means a lot of things; among those things is recycling. We just finished a litter event and between that and recycling those are our two biggest things.” Harris said. “The electronics recycling event allows people to come get rid of their electronics. Most people know they are recyclable and don’t want to just throw them out when they can be recycled.”
Among the items that will be accepted are printers, copiers, traditional and cell phones, fax machines, all types of computers and monitors, scanners, networking equipment, keyboards, computer mice, cables, wires, video players, CD players, game machines, discs and most batteries. Almost anything that runs on electricity or batteries and the accompanying accessories that go with them will be recycled or safely disposed of.
“The company we use coordinates everything. We are just there to say ‘hi’ and thank people for coming. We also will help them get items out of their vehicles,” Harris said.
There is no cost for the event but donations for are appreciated.
Keep Rowlett Beautiful hosts the event to prevent the hazardous metals from getting sent to the landfill.
“The event gets larger every year. At the last event we had 11 tons collected. There is very little they won’t take that has to do with electronics. We even accept all types of batteries,” Harris said.
