Full steam ahead: Chamber hope to ride positive momentum into 2013

The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce has had a positive 2012. One of the board’s initiatives this year was get the business community more involved in city events and activities.
“One of the things our board chairman this year, Susan Harris, did this year was to try and get the board more involved with things going on in the city. If there is something going on in the city we at the chamber want to show that we want to be a part of it,” said Terry McCullar, chamber president. “She set up a tracking chart called the best of board to track their involvement and encourage them to attend things.”
The increased involvement has kept the chamber busy but has also brought some positive results by improving the chamber’s relationship with the city staff and city council.
“The mayor on more than one occasion this year has thanked us. He has helped us a lot. When he is visiting a local business he will recommend that they talk to the chamber,” McCullar said.
As part of its efforts to become more involved in the community, the chamber hosted a “Spread the Love” event this year, during which they collected peanut butter and jelly for Mesquite Social Services.
“We collected hundreds of pounds of stuff for them,” McCullar said.
McCullar said the last couple of months of the year are always pretty busy for the chamber as they prepare to head into 2013.
“The last couple months we have been really busy. We just wrapped up a successful Taste and Trade event. Our attendance was down but those that attended seemed to think it was our best one so far,” McCullar said.
The chamber will close out 2012 by helping to kick off the Santa Cop Toy Drive at Windsor Florist, 201 W. Main Street, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15.
“We are kicking this off a little earlier than in the past. We hope for a successful kick off. It seems the need each year gets bigger and bigger,” McCullar said.
He said that the chamber has seen some growth in membership during the year that he hopes will continue into the new year.
“We are hoping 2013 will be successful for us. We have a couple of new folks coming on board in January. The new year really kicks off for us on Feb. 1 at our awards banquet,” McCullar said.
