Project Lifesaver project

Many of us have had the horrible experience of losing track of a child in a store or at an event. Usually we find them quickly, but during the few minutes that we can’t locate our loved one, terrible possibilities go through our minds, and those minutes can feel like hours.
For a person who is caring for an older loved one with dementia or other cognitive disorder, the possibility of a family member wandering off can keep them up at night. Not everyone suffering from dementia will wander, but the threat that it will happen at some point in the progression of their disease is very real and although there are often warning signs, the wandering behavior can sometimes occur suddenly.
Thankfully, our communities have a tool available to help relieve this worry for many caregivers. Project Lifesaver, a program run by the police departments of Addison, Carrollton and Farmers Branch for residents of these three communities, uses state-of-the-art technology to locate people with Alzheimer’s disease or related conditions. A radio transmitter worn as a wrist band helps emergency responders locate the missing person quickly, saving valuable minutes and preventing serious injuries.
