Mason earns Player of Week honor
McKinney North girls basketball senior Alexis Mason was recently named the Dallas Morning News Player of the Week. Mason is a central piece of North’s success this season. The No. 8 state ranked Lady Bulldogs are 25-3 on the season and 10-0 in district action.
“This a great honor for her, for our program and for our school,” said head coach Michael Oldham. “I couldn’t think of a more deserving young person to earn this honor.”
Randle makes junior national select team
USA Basketball today named the roster for its 2013 USA Junior National Select Team that will take on the World Select Team in the 2013 Nike Hoop Summit. The USA will be led by two coaches and four players with prior international basketball experience, including USA medalists and prep standouts Julius Randle (Prestonwood Christian Academy/ McKinney, Texas), Aaron Gordon (Archbishop Mitty H.S./San Jose, Calif.), Rondaé Hollis-Jefferson (Chester H.S./Chester, Pa.), and Jabari Parker (Simeon Career Academy/Chicago, Ill.).
The 2013 Nike Hoop Summit will be played at 6 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, April 20 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore. Tickets are now on sale, with reserved courtside seats for $25 and $50 and general admission $5 in advance and $10 on game day. McKinney’s Hann in Metroplex Challenge
Metroplex Gymnastics and Swim, located in Allen, will host the Metroplex Challenge Jan. 25-27 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
The challenge is one of the largest meets in the nation with more than 3,000 athletes set to compete. It also includes a pair of NCAA meets featuring men’s teams from Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Texas as well as women’s teams from Oklahoma, Georgia, LSU, Washington and Oregon.
McKinney hometown resident Michael Hann (Texas A&M) is one of the many Metroplex competing. Also competing are Allen’s Presten Ellsworth (Oklahoma), Plano’s Stanton Rehkemper (Oklahoma), Allen’s Josh Wilson (Illinois), and Plano’s Emmanuel Monroy (Iowa).
Local women in the competition include Allen’s Kati Breazeal (Georgia), Plano’s Taylor Spears (Oklahoma), Plano’s Lauren Alexander (Oklahoma) and Rowlett’s Paige Bixler (Washington). For more info, go to: metroplexchallenge.com.

DFW Coaches clinic
High school coaches have a chance to learn from their own. On Jan. 23-25, Embassy Suites Outdoor World at DFW Airport will be the site of a DFW Coaches Clinic, featuring a litany of high school coaches as speakers. Sixteen 50-minute lectures will be given by the coaches on hand, with attendees slated to enjoy a Friday night “Chalk Talk” and dinner with one of the state’s top offensive or defensive minds.
There will also be a Texas Hold-Em tournament on Friday, an FCA lecture on Saturday, plus a $1,000 cash prize up for grabs after the last lecture on Sunday. The clinic’s registration fee is $80. Visit the clinic website at coachesclinic.net.
