10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers keep district title hopes alive with win over Highland Park

West Mesquite still needs some help if it wants to extend its run of seven straight district championships, but it kept its hopes alive on Friday with a 76-49 trouncing of Highland Park.
The Wranglers improved to 9-2 in 10-4A and move into a tie for second place with the Scots.
Carrollton Newman Smith took care of North Forney and upped its record to 11-0 in district play.
West Mesquite faces the Trojans on the road on Tuesday with a chance to close the gap for first place to a game with a victory. They would then have to take care of business in their final two games and hope Newman Smith drops one of its last two to force a tie for first place.
Poteet's playoff hopes came to an end on Friday with a 53-35 loss to Carrollton Creekview.
The Pirates needed to come up with one of their best performances of the season and it simply did not happen, as the Mustangs rolled to a 33-14 halftime lead and were able to cruise to the finish.
Shyari Cheathem had 13 points and Kelsey Stewart added eight for Poteet, while Creekview was led by BriAnna Shavers with 19 points.
The Pirates will try to get back on the winning track on Tuesday against Terrell.
Creekview can clinch the fourth and final playoff berth with one win in its final three games, or one more loss by North Forney.
