The filing period to run for city council is under way. Candidates were allowed to begin filing on Wednesday, Jan. 30. To run for a city office an application must be submitted to the city secretary's office. The filing period closes on March 1.

The May 11 election will decide the mayor, Place No. 1 representative, Place No. 2 representative and Place No. 6 representative.

He works for the Mesquite ISD. Porter has been a Mesquite resident since 1936.

Al Forsythe represents Place No. 2. Forsythe is ending his second term on the council. He defeated Brad Underwood in 2011 to retain his seat. Forsythe is retired from Texas Instruments and has lived in Mesquite since 1961.

Place No. 6 is represented by Dennis Tarpley. Tarpley was first elected to the city council in 2003. He defeated David Fitzgerald in 2011 to retain his seat. He works as a certified public accountant. Tarpley has lived in Mesquite since 1973.
