Candidates can now file to run for a seat on the Rowlett City Council. The filing period opened Wednesday, Jan. 30, and ends March 1.
There are four positions that will be in the hands of the voters during the May 11 election. The positions up for election are mayor, Place No. 2 representative, Place No. 4 representative and Place No. 6 representative.
The position of mayor is currently held by Todd Gottel. Gottel was elected mayor during a special election following the resignation of former Mayor John Harper. He ran unopposed. Prior to serving as mayor, Gottel was the council's mayor pro tem and Place No. 4 representative.
Place No. 2 is currently represented by Donna Davis. Davis is coming to the end of her first term on the council. She defeated Jerry Berggren in a runoff election in 2010. Davis is a retiree with a background in human resources.
Ron Miller is the current representative for Place No. 4. Miller was elected during a special election in 2011, defeating Duane Fecher and Brownie Sherrill for the seat vacated when Gottel ran for mayor. Miller has a background in real estate.
The representative for Place No. 6 is currently Michael Gallops. Gallops is concluding his first term on the council. Gallops defeated Randy Mays during a runoff election in 2010. He is employed as a social worker.
All of the incumbents are eligible to run for another term. The city charter limits council members to two consecutive three-year terms.
