Girls basketball: Backcourt explosive in win, boys team drops a pair of games
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
Carroll's defense was so strong Friday against Justin Northwest that the Lady Dragons nearly had two individuals outscore the Lady Texans.
Kennedy Leonard and Gretchen Morrison had 26 and 25 points, respectively, as the squad pasted Northwest, 77-31.
Carroll limited Northwest to 13 points in the first half as it stormed into the break leading by 27 points and held the Lady Texans to single digits in 3-of-4 quarters.
The Lady Rebels fell behind Carroll as a result of the Lady Dragons' 50-36 win Jan. 22.
Leonard again paced the squad with 19 points and was followed by Kami Mickens with 15. Richland was a one-woman band as Destiny Nunley scored 27 of the Lady Rebels' 36 points.
Trailing, 11-10, after one quarter, the Lady Dragons outscored Richland, 12-4, in the second quarter and put the game away with a 17-10 run in the fourth.
Carroll had a chance to strengthen its lead in the standings Tuesday at home against Keller (results not available as of press time) and close the regular season with contests at Fossil Ridge Friday and at home Tuesday against. Both games are at 6:30 p.m.
Boys basketball: Carroll drops a pair
State-ranked Richland put an end to Carroll's four-game boys basketball win streak Jan. 22 when the Rebels were tough to slow down in an 85-60 victory.
A Dragons squad that prefers to play up-tempo was unable to keep pace with Richland, which opened with three consecutive quarters of 20-plus points and led at halftime, 49-29.
Daniel Brown paced Carroll with 18 points while the Rebels were led by the triumvirate of Hayden Hunter (22 points), Tim Priller (17) and Leyton Hammonds (16).
The Dragons followed Friday with a loss at Northwest (52-45). Carroll had previously beaten the Texans Dec. 21 (68-63).
Brown had 15 points and Josh Tatum recorded 12 for Northwest.
Despite the rough week, Carroll (5-4) was still in playoff position by a two-game margin ahead of Timber Creek (3-6) and Fossil Ridge (3-6) entering Tuesday's matchup against Keller (results not available as of press time).
The Dragons go on the road to face the Panthers at 8 p.m. Friday and hosts Haltom at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
