Wranglers boast highly-touted signing class

If the West Mesquite players were not sure how much talent was on last year's football team, college recruiters were a constant reminder.

For the past year, the Wranglers have been front and center in the eyes of college programs, who have been paying close attention since last spring.

On Wednesday's National Signing Day, eight West Mesquite players signed letters of intent, including five at Division I programs.

"It has been a privilege and an honor to work with these guys," West Mesquite head coach Mike Overton said. "This senior class has made four straight playoff appearances and it doesn't get much better than that. They have represented West Mesquite with class."

Although a few more players could still sign in the coming weeks, the signees on Wednesday featured Kameron Miles (Texas A&M), Eldridge Massington (UCLA), Dimarya Mixon (Nebraska), Will Earley (Arizona State), Andre Thompson (New Mexico State), Nick Akins (Arkansas Tech), Darryl Battles (Southwest Baptist) and Tre Jones (Iowa Central).

Finalizing the decision is something that several of the West Mesquite players wrestled with.

Massington originally committed to USC but switched to UCLA, where he enrolled in January. Mixon was an initial Missouri pledge that opted to head to Nebraska. Miles committed to Tennessee early in the recruiting process, but had a change of heart in the fall.

"They (A&M) were always in the back of my mind and when they beat Alabama it really caught my attention," Miles said. "I went down there to visit and it just felt like home."

Miles had a good support system through the recruiting process, as well. With teammates that were also getting national attention, he was not on an island, having people close to him to share similar stories.

Miles also had a close connection down in College Station in his cousin, All-American defensive lineman Damontre Moore, a Rowlett graduate who is projected as a top-five pick in April's NFL Draft.

"I talked to him a lot," Miles said. "He told me that I would really like it down there and talked about this was the place I should be and that there was a lot of good things going on there."

Miles joins an Aggie class that is ranked in the top 10 by most national recruiting servies. When asked about his goals at the next level, Miles, who stepped in as a wildcat quarterback on offense when his team needed him, naturally went for a team goal, and a big one.

"Win the national championship," he said with a smile.
