Recently, selected students from across Texas traveled to San Marcos to join the Texas Private School Music Educator Association (TPSMEA) All-State Band and Choir. When the students gathered for the three days of intense rehearsals and performance, a local school was represented far beyond its size.

Coram Deo Academy (CDA) of Flower Mound, with a student body of 636, a symphonic band of 40 and choir of 14, placed 12 members in the 2012-13 TPSMEA All-State Band and Choir. Ten years ago there was no band program at CDA, and no CDA choir student had been selected for All-State until this year.

Students from over 100 Texas private schools submitted recordings of audition music in November. Following the selection process in December when the recordings were adjudicated, 10 CDA students were selected for All-State Band: Emma Weatherford on flute, Grace Linebarger and Patrick Gaskamp on clarinet, Nathan Bowen and Hope Morriss on trumpet, Zach Smith on bassoon, Ben Kuykendall on bass clarinet, Lauren Boyer and Hayley Russell on French horn, and Bryton Praslicka on percussion. Andrew Kuykendall on trombone was selected for the All-State Jazz Band. Angela Bowen was the first CDA choir student to be chosen for the TPSMEA All- State Choir.

Chair audition results for the CDA students were: Zach Smith - 1st chair bassoon, Nathan Bowen - 1st chair trumpet, Emma Weatherford - 3rd chair flute. Andrew Kuykendall was selected as 1st chair trombone in the All-State Jazz Band.

The weekend, under the instruction of nationally recognized conductors, concluded with concerts performed by the bands and choir at Evans Auditorium at Texas State University.
