Familiar territory: Lady Bobcats advance to regional semifinals

The Celina girls basketball team entered the postseason with losses in two of its final three district games.
Consider the slide over after three consecutive playoff wins, including Tuesday’s 65-56 overtime victory against Madison that put the Lady Bobcats into the regional semifinals for the second year in a row.
“It didn’t seem like we would even get it to overtime,” said Jordan Davis, Celina head coach. “The girls did a good job of finishing.”
The Lady Bobcats found themselves trailing by six points in the final two minutes of the game before mounting a comeback with starting forward KJ Stastny on the bench with five fouls.
“The girls that were in the game stepped up really big,” Davis said. “We just made a few plays and got it to overtime.”
It was all Celina in the extra frame, with the Lady Bobcats using an 11-2 run to close the game and Madison’s season. The contest marked the second overtime affair in Celina’s first three postseason games.
“It’s added a lot of gray hairs,” Davis said. “We’re finding ways to get it done. That’s the important thing.”
Balance was the name of the game on offense, with three Lady Bobcats reaching double figures. Junior guard Sarah Cantu and sophomore forward Kynese Davis led the group with 16 points apiece, while sophomore guard Alex Jones added 15. Davis also chipped in a game-high 21 rebounds in the game.
“That’s pretty insane,” Davis said. “And every one of them was crucial.”
The victory improved Celina’s season mark to 28-6 and put the team into a 6 p.m. regional semifinals matchup against Pittsburg on Friday at Texas A&M-Commerce University.
“[Pittsburg] is big, physical and tough,” Davis said. “Anyone that’s going to be in the regional tournament has earned their way there.”
Prior to Tuesday’s victory against Madison, the Lady Bobcats earned a 71-52 victory against Melissa. Cantu poured in a game-high 24 points in the contest, while junior guard Callie Wells added 19 and Davis chipped in 12 more.
In the game, Celina stormed out to a 31-22 lead at the break. The team then pulled away for good with a 25-point third quarter that extended its advantage to 19 points before the start of the fourth.
The Lady Bobcats now find themselves two wins away from making a return trip to the Class 3A state tournament in Austin.
