23-4A GIRLS SOCCER: Poteet closes out first half of district season on a high note
Published: Wednesday, February 27, 2013 4:17 PM CST
Having already edged the second-place team in 23-4A play last Tuesday, Poteet took aim at the third and fourth-place teams this week.
With a pair of regulation victories, the Pirates (5-0-1-0) finish the first half of the district season with 17 points, allowing them to maintain their one-point advantage over Forney (5-0-0-1).
Poteet got a tough battle with Crandall on Tuesday, but a goal from Sheridyn Barnes and a stout defensive effort was enough for a 1-0 victory.
West Mesquite battled Forney tough for 80 minutes on Tuesday but fell just short in a 1-0 loss.
The Wranglers (3-3-0-0, nine points) are still in good position as they are in sole possession of fourth place, four points ahead of Kaufman.
Last Friday, Poteet had posted a 3-0 win over West Mesquite, getting goals from Barnes, Joy Carlock and Yaritsi Miranda.
The Pirates have a good chance to continue their winning streak this week against the two bottom teams in the 23-4A standings when they play at Terrell on Friday and against North Forney on Tuesday at A.C. New Middle School.
West Mesquite has a bye on Friday and then will set its sights on third place when they play Crandall on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
